“The spacing here is 52px, and I’d like 50px.”
I read an email from a client who contacted me earlier this year because he really needed a website. I love living in the moment, so I jumped right in. “Let’s do it. Domain name, design, build, and off we go.” But the client had other ideas.
Pondering. Thinking. Sighing. Changing the design again.
Difficult, terrible. Pixel-by-pixel hassle.
I’m known for having the patience of an angel, but even that wears thin at some point. I couldn’t understand why he kept doubting and changing things. Every time, I made it exactly the way he wanted, and still, another pixel was somehow out of place.
Frustrated, I explained it to my son during lunch. I told him that no one misses a single pixel when they want to order something or look up information. Of course it has to look good, and of course it has to work well. But no potential customer ever decided not to buy something because a pixel was one or two off.
My autistic son, as always, had his own perspective, and yes, autistic people can be sensitive to these details. But even he understood what I meant. No, even an autistic person doesn’t get upset about a missing pixel when they come to buy something. At that moment, your focus is on the goal: a purchase, or a moment of connection.
So… what was really going on with this client?
And then it clicked.
This wasn’t about pixels.
This was fear of publishing.
Endless tinkering to avoid going live.
Keeping things “almost finished” so they don’t become real.
Because once it’s live, the illusion of perfection disappears.
Lingering at the edge of the pool. Afraid to jump.
What if you sink?
But… what if you swim?
I always tell my clients: a website is never finished.
It’s always a work in progress.
Systems, plugins, and themes need updates.
Content needs to grow.
Designs change with trends.
It.
Is.
Never.
Finished.
