I stumbled across a Dutch reality show B&B Vol Liefde during my chicken-sitting adventure. I mostly switched it on in the background while I was illustrating because, unlike my own neighbourhood, it was incredibly quiet there. I found the voice-over hilarious because, seriously, who wrote those scripts? At the same time, though, all the filler words were driving me up the wall.
Especially Dutch people who use ‘like’ five times in a single sentence. Just don’t. It’s painfully cringeworthy. I’d honestly rather hear the old-fashioned ‘uh’.
The familiar Dutch filler phrases kept popping up as well, such as snap je? (‘you know what I mean?’) and zeg maar (‘sort of’). I don’t know whether you notice them more when you’re only listening to an interview instead of actually watching it, but the filler words were practically tripping over one another.
Like, just don’t. Or whatever.
