I have two types of clients.
“Oh, have you finally chosen a niche?”

No, not really. I still enjoy too many things to rule anything out. But I do see two distinct types of clients.
One wants complete control and tells me exactly how everything should be designed.
The other is more like the Royal Club commercial: “just do whatever you want”, which gives me total freedom.
Where it sometimes goes wrong is with the “absolute control” group. They think they’re ready to give me full freedom… until they see the result. That’s when they start figuring out what they actually really want. And that group? That’s the real challenge.
Asking what they have in mind at the start of a project rarely works. So instead, I ask: “What do you absolutely not want?”

Funny enough, everyone knows that instantly.
From there, it comes down to trust, that I understand what they do want. And to be fair: nine out of ten times, I get it right.
