Some collaborations go back so far that you lose track of how many books you’ve worked on together. I’ve been designing books for this publisher for fifteen years now. This time, I created the cover and interior layout for Verheffing, beweging en bewustzijnsniveau.
For me, book design is about how everything works together. The cover catches your attention, but once you open the book, reading should feel effortless. The right typeface, clear chapter headings and enough breathing room on the page. These choices all shape the reading experience, even if the reader never consciously notices them.
And that’s where the work comes in. Because a page that looks perfectly natural doesn’t always start out that way. Text that won’t quite fit, a heading left at the bottom of a page or an awkward word break. Those are the little things I keep an eye on.
After fifteen years of working together, it’s still a pleasure to design another book. A new manuscript, a new title and another opportunity to bring all the pieces into place.
