“Can you make the phone number a bit bigger?”

I get an email from an American client for whom I design ads. I pull up the design. I had already made it more “American” than I personally prefer, but apparently, it needs to be even louder.

Over the past 22 years, I’ve worked internationally with clients and companies all over the world. My work has reached the Netherlands, Belgium, England, China, Australia, the United States, Canada, the Bahamas, Curaçao, and probably a few places I’m forgetting.

I quickly learned that every region, every country, every culture has its own style of design. So whenever someone asks me to design something, I always take the time to understand their background.

It took some getting used to, the American way of designing. While I prefer calm and balance, Americans want things to practically scream off the page. The louder, the better. I even found it exhausting driving around there sometimes, with all those shouting billboards along the road. But it fits their culture.

In the meantime, I’ve made the phone number bigger.

Because yes, if you want to keep some peace in your own workflow, sometimes you just have to give the client what they’re asking for.

She immediately replies that it looks amazing.
She’s happy.
I’m at peace.
