What are your thoughts about signing an NDA?
It’s an interesting topic. Recently, a discussion flared up in a group for book professionals. Someone had been asked to sign an NDA. Apparently, it was quite a sensitive subject, because the usually quiet group suddenly came back to life:
“Nonsense.”
“Ridiculous.”
“If that’s a requirement, I wouldn’t even want to work with them.”
And I thought to myself: huh?
I work with many American authors, and you know how much Americans value contracts and reassurance. Over the years, I’ve had quite a few conversations with people who were worried that I might use their manuscript for my own benefit.
That possibility had never even crossed my mind until someone brought it up. But once they did, I understood their concern. The world doesn’t always feel like a safe place, and trust doesn’t come naturally to everyone.
That’s why, even before someone dares to ask, I tell them that I’m more than happy to sign an NDA or contract. This is often followed by a sigh of relief, because it isn’t an easy subject to bring up.
If that gives someone a sense of security, who am I to deny them that safe foundation for our working relationship?
As I said to a family member just yesterday: trust is important, but in my opinion, it should be based on facts, mutual respect, and, above all, open communication.
Blind trust? I stopped believing in that a long time ago.
