“So you create the illustrations, do the design and prepare everything for print?”
An email lands in my inbox with an enquiry about illustrating a new children’s book.

Yup, I do it all.

Not because I know a little bit about everything, but because I’m still rather old-school. In college, it was endlessly drilled into us just how important it is to supply artwork correctly for print. To me, illustrating, designing, and preparing technically accurate, print-ready files naturally belong together.

When I opened LinkedIn this morning, I came across a post about apple pie. By the time I wanted to refer back to it, the algorithm had already swallowed it up.

In short: a business shouldn’t compete on price, but on quality. If you can explain to your clients where that quality lies, they will understand the difference between a mass-produced apple pie and Grandma’s freshly baked apple pie, made with apples from her own garden.

I understand the theory.

But when the first thing a potential client asks is, “Quanto costa?” — how much does it cost? — I feel as though I’m avoiding the question if I don’t simply give them an answer.
On the other hand, when someone asks only about the price and shows no interest in how I work, nine times out of ten I already know they probably won’t choose to work with me. In the end, they’ll opt for AI.

And that’s fine.
But don’t expect the flavour and care of Grandma’s freshly baked apple pie when you’re only willing to pay for a mass-produced one.
