We all know the phrase: “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. However, the cover is the first thing a reader sees and has a huge impact on whether the reader wants to know more and picks up the book (or opens the blurb online) or walks on and never looks at it again.
If you have been following me for a while, you know that I designed the book cover and formatted the book for “Miljonair in loondienst” After the book was launched it went skyrocketing fast to the first place, best-selling management books.
I can’t take all the credit for that of course but when an author and designer work closely together in a team, magical things happen.
To be able to reach this level, I listen carefully to the ideas of the author, I get to know the book and the audience it is written for. When I have enough information I create the cover for the book and I make a readable layout, with headers, sub-headers, and body text. If it fits the story, I use small elements that start a new chapter or maybe a repetitive symbol in the footer.

Together the author or publisher receives two high-resolution PDF files; one of the cover and the other of the content. While the files are off to print, I create a 3D image of the cover for promotion and pre-orders.

And that is how you become a number one best-selling author.
